In the center of Humboldt County, there is a small family-run company called Humboldt County's Own. Phil founded the business in 2002, and in 2012 he passed it down to his son Nathan. When Phil founded the company, he had a goal to revolutionize the nutrient market by creating a new benchmark for high performance additives at a level of quality and distinctiveness never before seen while simultaneously upholding superior customer service. Phil's vision still guides the way the business functions today. 

It all started when Phil had some crazy thoughts about making new things to help his garden grow. In the early 1990s, he enjoyed reading plant science journals and patents while tinkering with his garden in a tractor shed. He was only using the mixtures for himself, but when his neighbors noticed how lovely his garden looked, they were interested in what he was using. Soon after, Phil began to share his creations with his friends and neighbors. As a result, word about them spread like wildfire.  

The Leavitt family launched Eel River Hydroponics in Fortuna in 2002. They gave away free samples of their products to attract people from all across Northern California to the store. BushMaster, Gravity, Purple Maxx, and Snowstorm Ultra were the first four of Phil's creations, and all four were immediately popular since they were so different from anything anyone had ever seen. 

When the items' capabilities were discovered, shops from San Francisco to Los Angeles flocked to purchase them. As soon as they became aware of the craze, the national distributors came to the store one by one and promised to ship the products across America. Phil could never have imagined that the mixtures he was creating for himself in a small tractor shed in the middle of rural Humboldt County would ever become what is today known as Humboldt County's Own.
